Motorcycling NT launches JDNT Program with support from Motorcycling Australia Funding

Motorcycling NT (MNT) is proud launch its Junior Development NT (JDNT) program, which will encompass all disciplines of motorcycling throughout the Northern Territory.

With the assistance of funding from Motorcycling Australia (MA), MNT has purchased three Yamaha YZF-R15s to strengthen its junior road racing program. Additionally, a youth diversion initiative has been incorporated to provide young people with a safe, structured environment for growth and development.

The program is designed for ages 10 to 16, offering an exciting opportunity for young riders to engage in motorcycle road racing in a positive and controlled manner. The program aims to foster discipline, teamwork, leadership and personal responsibility while helping participants develop vital skills in motorcycle control, racing techniques, track safety and bike maintenance.

“We’re thrilled to launch this program, which provides a pathway for young people to learn valuable life skills through the discipline of motorcycling,” said Cilla Thomas, CEO of Motorcycling NT. “The JDNT Program is more than just about racing: it’s about guiding youth to become well-rounded individuals who can apply what they’ve learned in the sport to all areas of their lives.”

The JDNT Program will run over 12 weeks, with weekly sessions focusing on a different aspect of motorcycle road racing. From basic safety and handling to more advanced racing strategies, the program is designed to build skill, confidence and personal growth. Participants will also engage in bike maintenance workshops and safety training to ensure that they have the knowledge to care for their equipment and operate it safely.

The introduction of the YZF-R15 is a key development in supporting the program’s success, providing the next generation of riders with reliable and high-performance motorcycles to hone their skills. The Top End Road Racing Club will work closely with MNT to deliver the program, ensuring young participants are trained in a safe and supportive environment.

“The JDNT program offers young riders not only the opportunity to grow as racers but also as individuals,” said Bradley Todd, President of Top End Road Racing. “We’re excited to be part of a project that helps to build a foundation for long-term involvement in motorsports, promoting values such as respect, focus, and perseverance.”

This initiative will also act as a diversion program for youth at risk, providing an alternative activity that builds self-esteem and encourages positive behaviour. Through their participation, young riders will gain confidence, develop lasting friendships, and experience the satisfaction of personal and skill development.

The JDNT program is set to make a significant impact on youth involvement in motorcycling across the Northern Territory.

Darwin, NT – March 2, 2025 – The opening round of the 2025 Holeshot Yamaha Thumpers series has set a new milestone for the Darwin Motorcycle Club (DMCC). With a staggering 149 riders registered, the event saw over 200 bikes racing across multiple classes, showcasing the growing popularity of motorcycling in the Northern Territory.

This milestone event not only showcased exceptional talent but also demonstrated the ongoing expansion of the sport. In a bid to further enhance inclusivity and provide more opportunities for young female riders, Motorcycling NT (MNT) introduced a combined Junior Girls class for season 2025 which DMCC included in their schedule. This welcomed addition was warmly received, highlighting the commitment of the club to support and nurture the next generation of female motorcyclists.

Each State/Territory team manager must engage in a thorough analysis of qualifying times, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of their own competitors and those of other state competitors. This intricate process ensures that the selected athletes not only demonstrate individual excellence but also take into account the selection of other competitors within their classes by other managers.

A special mention to all the riders who travelled to WA to fight for a place in the top 40 and just missed out in their respective classes including #112 Kingsley Potts and #126 Floyd Williamson. Your determination and effort have not gone unnoticed, and your dedication to the sport is truly commendable. Keep pushing forward, and we look forward to seeing you back on the track, stronger and more determined than ever.
