Gillman Locked In to Host 2019 KTM AJMX

September 20, 2018 Filed Under: Important Announcements, Motocross, News

Motorcycling Australia (MA) is thrilled to announce that the 2019 KTM Australian Junior Motocross Championship (AJMX) will be hosted by the Motocross Riders Association at the Gillman Motocross Track in Gillman, South Australia (SA). With multiple State Championships under their belt over the past 10 years, the Motocross Riders Association will no doubt deliver an exceptional Championship and an event to remember. The dates have also been locked in, taking place September 28 – October 5, 2019.

Located 12 kilometres from the Adelaide CBD and a short drive to the airport, the Gillman Motocross Track is ideally situated for the AJMX and as event promoter Mark Walmsley highlighted, this event should generate a large crowd.

“I’m ecstatic to bring AJMX back to SA again,” Walmsley said. “We’re going to make it huge and make it the best one in Australia from the last five years. Although it’s getting to a warmer time of year, we can handle it. We’ve got enough water and machinery to deal with the weather.

“We ran a state title a few weeks ago and did a lot of radio advertising and got great spectator numbers. I think the numbers will be huge for a national title like AJMX. If we can get kids there, maybe we can get more people on the track, especially because the Juniors are the future of the sport.”

The AJMX is the apex of Junior Motocross racing in Australia and MA is excited to collaborate with the Motocross Riders Association to showcase our homegrown junior talent in this national title!

Team Australia Ready to Defend their TdN International Trophy

September 20, 2018 Filed Under: News, Trial

The Australian 2018 Trial des Nations (TdN) Team are raring to go and contest this year’s event at Sokolov, Czech Republic, September 22-23. The TdN is without a doubt one the most prestigious motorcycle trial world events on the FIM calendar. After taking the International Trophy last year, Team Australia are aiming to once again punch above their weight and defend their title.

The world’s elite trial riders from all over the world have converged at Sokolov. An incredible twenty-three different countries have come together to decide global bragging rights across three classes.

It is hardly surprising given their dominance of the modern-day sport that Spain reign supreme in the premier Men’s World Trophy category. In fact, in the event’s thirty-four-year history the Trial powerhouses have won on no fewer than twenty-four occasions and are looking to stretch their current win-streak in the competition to a fantastic fifteen.

However, it’s the International Trophy and the Women’s classes that Australia will compete in. The Men’s International Trophy is always fiercely-fought and incredibly competitive and this year the Australian team will be going all-out to defend their title with strong opposition expected to come from, among others, the United States and Czech Republic teams.

Making up the Men’s effort for Australia will be Kyle Middleton, Connor Hogan and Chris Bayles. These three pulled off an amazing achievement last year with Australia’s first ever International class victory. Of course, this adds extra pressure for them to attempt to go back to back but they will relish the challenge. These three riders were very successful back at the Australian X-trial Championship earlier this year in Perth. Middleton is also the current Australian Trial Champion in the Solo Class.

The Australian Women’s Team will have a new look this year with Kristie McKinnon, Michelle Coleman and Jenna Lupo making up the squad. McKinnon, a multiple time Australian Trials Champion and Michelle Coleman will return to the fold after several years away from the team. Tasmanian Jenna Lupo will be looking to make a strong impression.

The team have recently touched down in Sokolov and have spent the past day setting the bikes up. They even managed to get a practice in and were happy with the bikes and the training session.

To keep up-to-date with all the happening from the 2018 Trial des Nations, stay tuned to the Motorcycling Australia Website or the Australian Trials Community Facebook page.

Adelaide’s Gillman Speedway to host 2019 FIM Oceania Speedway Sidecar Championship

September 19, 2018 Filed Under: News, Speedway

FIM Oceania has confirmed the FIM Oceania Speedway Sidecar Championship
will once again be conducted at Adelaide’s Gillman Speedway Stadium.
This is the fifth successive year this event has been allocated to Gillman and
Speedway Manager David Parker couldn’t be happier — “To get the event five
years running, and last season and this as a standalone venue, is something all
our officials, staff and volunteers can be very proud of.”

In confirming the allocation, FIM Oceania President Glen Williams said “FIM Oceania is thrilled to be associated with the FIM Oceania Speedway Sidecar Championship at Gillman Speedway, in South Australia.

“We are looking forward to yet again seeing some of the world’s best Speedway Sidecar riders battling it out for an evening of spectacular racing. FIM Oceania has the important role of helping to create and develop the sport of motorcycling within our region. Our continued support of this high-quality event reflects the valued exposure that Gillman Speedway brings to our sport within Oceania.

“I am sure that the FIM Oceania Speedway Sidecar Championship will again be action packed and hotly contested. It will be a weekend of handle bar to handle bar racing with riders from Australia, New Zealand joining International stars.

“Gillman Speedway allows spectators to see, smell, hear and feel all of the high octane race action up-close and it will be racing not to be missed”

The FIM Oceania Speedway Sidecar Championship will be held at Saturday night, 30 March 2019. Details of the riders taking part will be announced when each country makes its selections, but David Parker said he was pleased to say the current champion Darrin Treloar will be defending his FIM Oceania championship.

Charity Encourages MotoGP Fans to ‘Get Checked’

September 19, 2018 Filed Under: News, Road Race

The Australian Grand Prix Corporation (AGPC) is honoured to announce Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) as the Official Charity of the Michelin® Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix 2018 for a second consecutive year.

With 20,000 men diagnosed every year, and one in seven men likely to be affected by prostate cancer, PCFA is encouraging fans, their families and friends to ‘Get Checked’ and talk with their GP at the event this year.

PCFA CEO, Jane Endacott is thrilled to have the support of the AGPC in helping raise awareness amongst MotoGP™ fans.

“Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australian men, and the cause resonates with many fans who head down to the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit each year,” Ms Endacott said.

“Regular health check-ups are vital in beating the disease. Early detection is crucial in effectively fighting prostate cancer. Men over the age of 50, or 40 if they have a family history of prostate cancer, need to talk with their GP about prostate health,” she said.

Carla D’Amico, who is a specialist prostate cancer nurse at the Austin Health Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre, says there is a lot that can be done to encourage Australian men to be vigilant about their health.

“There are numerous resources available that provide men and their families with vital information about prostate cancer. Knowing your risk and actively monitoring your health is so important. Prostate cancer does not show symptoms in its early stages, so it is up to men and their doctors to regularly assess the risk. The best place to start is speaking to your GP and initiating the discussion about testing,” Ms D’Amico said.

“Being diagnosed with prostate cancer can be very overwhelming and there are often other factors, like mental health, that come into play following a diagnosis. My role as a specialist prostate cancer nurse helps men and their families to feel supported and hopefully make the treatment process less stressful,” she said.

James Doulis was diagnosed with prostate cancer two weeks before Christmas in 2017. As a motorbike racing enthusiast, James believes the partnership between AGPC and PCFA will help trigger Australian men to have a conversation about their own prostate cancer risk.

“Even though I have a nursing background and have been trained in palliative care, I still went into shock when I received my diagnosis. Nothing can prepare you to hear your name and the word ‘cancer’ in the same sentence. Thanks to my GP, I had the necessary blood tests to detect my cancer and I was able to be treated fairly quickly,” Mr Doulis said.

“Men need to realise that a simple blood test can save your life. We all need to take the responsibility and have the conversation with your GP about testing,” he said.

James formed a close bond with specialist nurse Carla D’Amico following his diagnosis. He credits her support to helping him navigate his treatment process.

“I helped care for my mother during her own cancer treatment and unfortunately she didn’t have the support of a specialist nurse. I would have had a completely different experience if I didn’t have extra support. Carla made an enormous impact on my treatment experience and helped to deliver complex information in manageable bites.”

Australian Grand Prix Corporation CEO, Andrew Westacott, is proud to partner with PCFA for a second year and believes the cause is an incredibly important one for MotoGP™ fans.

“We look forward to supporting PCFA at the event this year, and we will be promoting the powerful message for fans, their friends and families to ‘get checked’ and raise awareness about this health issue,” he said.

PCFA staff and volunteers will be collecting donations and selling merchandise across the event weekend.

All funds raised at the event will support PCFA’s awareness, nursing and research programs.
